Lately, I started playing Hero Wars, it was all just for fun and the winning was so easy and sweet untiiiiil…As I started leveling up, things changed it wasn’t just win, win, win.
Certain Heroes became a menace it was really hard to go passed through them especially when I really needed it like in the Tower where I ended up losing gold and other valuables.
This changed my perspective, the fun and games had to stop. I had to start strategizing and doing some research as well as several trial and errors in the Guild battles.
I acquired some findings which I would love to share with you, feel free to also add a comment or idea in the comment section.
In Hero Wars, there are two types of counters: hard counters and soft counters.
A hard counter is essentially a hero who is able to neutralize another hero or performs very well against a certain hero. I really like this counter especially against hard headed heroes.
A soft counter on the other hand is a hero that will neutralize the advantages of a particular hero or hero combination e.g. targeting backline heroes or preventing the team from developing their synergies.
For example
Hard counter
Yasmine although sweet when on your side, she can destroy you within a short time with her poison when on the receiving end. A hard counter for her is Helios whereas Celeste can purify her poison.
Soft counter
Thea for example is a backline hero so using Cleaver’s hook to bring her on the front line can affect her performance.
Hope it makes sense.

Countering Alvanor
Hard Counters:
Kai: being a physical damage dealer, and Alvanor, being a mage, is susceptible to high burst physical damage. Satori: Satori is specifically designed as an anti-mage hero.
Soft Counters:
Jorgen: Jorgen’s abilities disrupt enemy formations and reduce energy, affecting Alvanor’s ability to cast spells. Celeste: Her healing abilities help sustain the team, and her damage can be effective. Aurora: Her AoE damage and crowd control effects can be useful against Alvanor and his allies.
Countering Amira
Amira is a physical damage dealer with a focus on fire-themed attacks. Jorgen disrupts her charging and delays her ultimate ability. He can also effectively nullify Amira’s contributions, hindering her ability to unleash powerful attacks.
Heroes specializing in dealing with high burst damage are effective against Amira. Notable examples include Kai, who can swiftly reduce Amira’s health with his potent physical attacks. Heroes with high magic defence are valuable against Amira’s fire-themed abilities. Consider including heroes like Phobos, Maya, Markus, Thea, Peppy, or Cornelius in your lineup to mitigate Amira’s magical damage.
Countering Andvari
Andvari, a resilient tank, is susceptible to magic attacks. While lacking a definitive hard counter, these strategies prove effective: Utilize heroes with magic attacks (Celeste, Orion, Helios, Jorgen) to exploit Andvari’s vulnerability.Incorporate burst magic damage heroes (Phobos, Maya, Peppy) to wear down Andvari swiftly.
Heroes like Kai, Keira, or Yasmine dealing substantial physical damage, can contribute to wearing down Andvari. Heroes with crowd control (Jorgen) disrupt Andvari’s shielding and energy generation. Build a balanced team with a mix of magic and physical damage for effective synergy.
Countering Arachne
Utilize heroes with stun removal capabilities, such as Andvari, Sebastian, or Nebula, to negate Arachne’s annoying stuns. Employ heroes like Celeste, capable of denying healing, to counter Arachne’s regenerative capabilities.
Countering Artemis
Jorgen can disrupt Artemis’s energy regeneration and disrupt her synergies, making her less effective. Faceless can copy beneficial abilities from Artemis, turning their strengths against them.
Amira’s burst damage potential can help in quickly reducing Artemis’s health. Helios can provide team support and disrupt Artemis’s healing abilities, reducing her sustainability.
Countering Almighty Astaroth
When you see Astaroth’s just think Morrigan LOL. Also, you can Use Celeste combined with a high-damage team setup, to nullify Astaroth’s abilities and quickly reduce his health. But remember Morrigan is key.
Countering Aurora
Chabba serves as a hard counter, removing Aurora from the fight and preventing her from providing benefits to her team. Shroom can utilize his silence effect to neutralize Aurora, limiting her ability to support her team. Corvus offers a unique counter by redirecting Aurora’s effects back onto her team, disrupting their synergy. Rufus, with his ability to stay alive against non-physical attacks, can withstand Aurora’s magical assaults.
Countering Celeste
Cornelius serves as a hard counter, directly damaging intelligence heroes with significant damage. His abilities can prove effective in quickly reducing Celeste’s health, potentially leading to a one-shot scenario.
Countering Cleaver
Andvari protects allies against Cleaver’s skill with shielding, mitigating the impact of Cleaver’s abilities. Dorian’s Vampiric Aura allows the team to heal against Cleaver’s ability, potentially causing Cleaver to heal the enemy team more than deal damage. Not so Cleaver, mmmhh…
Countering Cornelius
Krista, typically having the highest intelligence, can effectively counter Cornelius by blocking his ultimate. Her abilities provide a strong defence against Cornelius’s targeted attacks. Strategically place Krista in a position where she can absorb and mitigate the impact of Cornelius’s abilities.
Countering Corvus
Corvus’s totem can pose a challenge, and countering him requires a strategic approach. Dorian serves as a hard counter against Corvus by using his Vampiric Aura to restore damage caused by the totem, effectively nullifying its impact.
Countering Dante
Effectively countering Dante involves strategic positioning and considerations for hero health. Utilizing heroes with Patronage can be particularly effective:
1. Positioning: Place your lowest health heroes in the backline to minimize the impact of Dante’s attacks. This positioning strategy can help mitigate the threat posed by Dante’s abilities.
2. Heroes with Patronage: Heroes with the Patronage ability can further reduce the damage dealt by Dante, offering additional protection to the team.
Countering Daredevil
Utilize Helios and wait for Daredevil to crit. Helios’s counter damage can be an effective way to deal with Daredevil, exploiting her reliance on critical hits. Corvus’s altar can be a great tool to deal with Daredevil. The additional damage from the altar can help neutralize Daredevil’s threat.
Countering Dorian
Celeste serves as a powerful counter against Dorian. Not only does she block the healing from Dorian’s Vampiric Aura, but she also converts it into magical damage, inflicting harm on the enemy team. Jorgen’s ability to redirect damage to the backline can disrupt Dorian’s positioning and allow the team to directly target Dorian early in the battle, potentially leading to a faster takedown.
Countering Elmir
Keira, with her high area damage, can efficiently deal with Elmir’s clones and contribute to reducing his overall effectiveness in battles. Ziri, as a tank, can absorb damage and withstand attacks from Elmir, providing a durable frontline option to deal with him effectively. Shroom and Dante, when levelled up, can perform well against Elmir. Their abilities, when optimized, contribute to countering Elmir’s impact on the battlefield.
Countering Faceless
Faceless heavily relies on a synergistic team setup. By countering her team composition, you can indirectly counter Faceless. Rufus, as a tank, can be effective against Faceless. His huge shield against magic damage helps mitigate Faceless’s impact, providing a durable frontline. Timely use of Thea and Shroom’s silencing skill can disrupt Faceless’s ability to maximize her potential, reducing her overall danger in battles.
Countering Fafnir
Yasmine serves as a hard counter against Fafnir, providing a direct solution to neutralize his impact on the battlefield. Iris can be effective against Fafnir, especially with her second skill targeting the backline. This ability disrupts Fafnir’s positioning and hinders his support role.
Understand Fafnir’s synergies with other heroes in his team. Addressing those synergies can contribute to countering Fafnir’s effectiveness.
Countering Galahad
Jorgen acts as a hard counter against Galahad, particularly in shutting down his ultimates. Jorgen’s ability to disrupt Galahad’s key skills can significantly reduce his impact on the battlefield.
Countering Heidi
While Heidi may not typically be a significant threat, if you find him problematic, Satori serves as a hard counter to neutralize him effectively
Countering Helios
Cleaver serves as a soft counter to Helios. His active skill allows him to directly attack backline heroes, providing a means to target Helios and disrupt his support role.
Countering Iris
Rufus serves as a counter to Iris due to his resilience against non-magic damage. Utilize Rufus to withstand attacks from Iris and other non-magic sources. The high damage output by Orion, Dante & Nebula can prove effective against Iris
Countering Isaac
Utilize heroes with single-target attacks to slow down Isaac’s skill loading. Single-target attackers can make it challenging for Isaac to accumulate energy quickly. Avoid using heroes with area damage, as they may inadvertently speed up Isaac’s skill loading by hitting multiple targets.
NOTE: I have always almost or lost when I used shroom in my team when facing Isaac, so try to avoid him.
Countering Ishmael
Celeste serves as a counter to Ishmael by blocking healing and converting it into magical damage. This can significantly reduce Ishmael’s sustainability. Helios soft counters Ishmael by dealing damage whenever Ishmael crits. This provides a means to control and mitigate Ishmael’s damage output.
Countering Jet
Helios serves as a soft counter against Jet, dealing damage whenever Jet crits. This can accumulate quickly and help control Jet’s impact on the battlefield. Employ heroes with the ability to deal instant damage to backline heroes. This can be effective against Jet, who often occupies the backline.
Countering Jorgen
Satori serves as a hard counter against Jorgen. By adding a mark and potentially one-shotting Jorgen when he gains extra energy, Satori can effectively neutralize Jorgen’s impact on the battlefield.
Countering Judge
Countering Judge involves focusing on heroes who can deal substantial damage to bring her down quickly. Additionally, heroes with magic defence are effective, with Phobos being highlighted as a strong option due to frequent ultimates. Other heroes with magic defence include Maya, Markus, Thea, Peppy, and Cornelius:
Countering Julius
Focus on heroes with high burst damage to quickly bring down Julius, especially when his shield is inactive. Utilize Jorgen to disrupt Julius’s abilities and contribute to the overall strategy of bursting him down.
Countering K’arkh
Effectively countering K’arkh involves utilizing heroes with specific abilities to mitigate his strengths. Andvari provides shield protection, Satori can hard counter with marks, and Jorgen can manipulate K’arkh’s energy:
Countering Kayla
Effectively countering Kayla involves utilizing heroes with specific abilities to address her resurrection. Morrigan, especially in combination with Corvus, can be effective, particularly against Aidan and Kayla:
Countering Keira
Effectively countering Keira involves utilizing heroes with specific abilities to exploit her vulnerabilities. Lian is highlighted as a hard counter due to her ability to charm Keira whenever she receives damage from her:
Countering Twins (Krista & Lars)
Andvari can directly deny Lars’ active skill, providing a means to disrupt the Twins’ coordination and reduce their impact. Satori serves as a hard counter against the Twins. By adding a mark and potentially one-shotting them when they gain extra energy, Satori can neutralize their threat.
Cleaver serves as a soft counter to the Twins. His active skill allows him to directly attack backline heroes, disrupting the Twins’ positioning and synergy. Dorian’s Vampiric Aura can help keep the team up against the Twins, providing sustained healing to withstand their attacks. Shroom, though surprising, may have unique abilities that prove effective against the Twins. Experimenting with his skills can uncover unexpected synergies.
Countering Lian
Avoid using area damage dealers like Keira or Orion against Lian. Opt for heroes with single-target damage to maximize efficiency. Utilize heroes with single-target damage to focus down other heroes of the team, limiting Lian’s potential impact. Heroes like Sebastian or Nebula, with charm removal abilities, can be effective in countering Lian’s charm effects.
Countering Lilith
Effectively countering Lilith involves utilizing heroes with specific abilities to exploit her vulnerabilities. Qing Mao is highlighted as a counter due to her percentage damage and armour penetration:
Countering Luther
Faceless serves as a counter against Luther. Using Faceless allows you to return Luther to the frontline, making it easier for your team to handle him. Maya can use her Poisonous Bonds skill to pull back Luther, contributing to the control and positioning of Luther on the battlefield.
Countering Martha
Celeste can block Martha’s healing and turn it into magical damage. This disrupts Martha’s support role and weakens her effectiveness. Cleaver serves as a soft counter to Martha. His ability to directly attack backline heroes like Martha disrupts her positioning and reduces her impact on the battlefield. Luther can jump to the backline and directly attack Martha, providing a means to target her specifically and disrupt her support abilities.
Countering Maya
K’arkh, with his burst damage, works well against Maya. His ability to deal significant damage can help neutralize Maya effectively. Any other area damage dealer that can target Maya is effective. The nature of area damage allows for efficient targeting and dealing with Maya.
Countering Mojo
Effectively countering Mojo involves utilizing crowd control effects, such as stuns from heroes like Arachne and Shroom, or simply focusing on high damage. Mojo is considered manageable, and running a solid team is often sufficient without a specific counter:
Countering Morrigan
Effectively countering Morrigan involves recognizing her synergy with Corvus and addressing Corvus as a priority. Referencing the counters for Corvus (see above) is crucial to dealing with Morrigan effectively.
Countering Mushy & Shroom
Heroes like Amira or Yasmin can serve as effective counters. Additionally, Isaac can be included when facing Shroom, as his dynamic with Shroom’s high damage may lead to Isaac gaining energy faster.
Countering Nebula
Sebastian can block Nebula’s ultimate, disrupting her ability to boost the performance of allied heroes. Employ a soft counter by focusing on the heroes Nebula is buffing. Directly countering the buffed heroes can mitigate Nebula’s impact on the battlefield. Heavy mages can be effective against Nebula. Their high magical damage output can counter Nebula and the heroes she buffs.
Countering Orion
Satori serves as a hard counter against Orion. By adding a mark and potentially one-shotting Orion when he gains extra energy, Satori can neutralize Orion’s threat. Jorgen, with his energy manipulation, can drain a significant amount of energy from Orion, hindering his ability to unleash powerful attacks.
Countering Peppy
Jhu is an effective counter against Peppy. As the last-standing hero in most cases, Jhu can use his skill against Peppy, dealing damage and disrupting her impact. Jorgen, with precise timing, can focus Peppy down using his damage redirect ability. Coordinating attacks strategically can maximize the effectiveness of Jorgen against Peppy. Yasmine can be handy in countering Peppy. Iris can also come in handy when countering Peppy.
Countering Phobos
Corvus serves as a direct counter to Phobos. His altar ability makes Phobos damage himself slowly, providing a reliable means of countering Phobos. Utilize teams with high magic damage output to exploit Phobos’s potential weaknesses in magical defence. Teams with high physical damage can also be effective against Phobos, capitalizing on potential weaknesses in his physical defences.
Countering Polaris
Nebula is one of the best counters against Polaris. Her ability to remove debuffs helps manage and mitigate the effects of Polaris’s abilities. Orion can also be effective against Polaris. His abilities may provide means to counter Polaris and deal with her on the battlefield.
In a surprising twist, Polaris can counter an enemy Polaris. Through her targeting abilities, she can disrupt the enemy Polaris’s actions and control the battle.
Countering Qing Mao
Counter Qing Mao with high-damage heroes. Due to her limited defensive capabilities, focusing her down with heroes dealing significant damage is effective. Area damage can also work against Qing Mao. Utilizing heroes with area damage capabilities can help in dealing with her effectively. Chabba can be used to eat away at the tank and then focus Qing Mao down. This strategy utilizes Chabba’s capabilities to weaken the tank and create an opening to target Qing Mao.
Countering Rufus
Use Morrigan, specifically with her fourth skill resurrection, to counter Rufus. This ability allows for the resurrection of fallen heroes, mitigating Rufus’s impact. Utilize physical heroes against Rufus. Their damage output can be effective in dealing with Rufus and preventing his resurrection. Shroom can be an effective counter against Rufus. His abilities can contribute to managing Rufus and limiting his impact on the battlefield.
Countering Satori
Cornelius serves as a powerful counter against Satori. His ability to directly damage intelligence heroes with a significant amount of damage can essentially one-shot Satori. Nebula and Celeste work effectively against Satori. Their abilities can contribute to countering his kit and disrupting his impact on the battlefield.
Countering Sebastian
Phobos can take Sebastian down with one ultimate attack, effectively one-shotting him. This direct approach can neutralize Sebastian’s impact on the battlefield. Helios is effective against Sebastian, particularly in countering the combined critical hit damage synergy that Sebastian often relies on. Helios’s abilities can tackle this aspect and disrupt Sebastian’s effectiveness.
Countering Thea
Cleaver can serve as a soft counter against Thea. His ability to directly attack backline heroes with his active skill can disrupt Thea’s positioning and reduce her impact on the battlefield. Yasmine can be effective against Thea, especially with her ability to attack from the back. Utilizing heroes with this capability can help in dealing with Thea. Iris, with her ability to attack from the back, can also be effective against Thea. This positioning strategy can contribute to managing Thea’s impact on the battlefield.
Countering Tristan
Satori can blow up any hero that gains a lot of bonus energy, making him an effective counter against Tristan. Coordinating Satori’s attacks strategically can deal with Tristan quite easily. The easiest way to counter Tristan is using a setup with two tanks. This approach provides additional protection and resilience against Tristan’s attacks, creating a more robust frontline.
Countering Yasmine
Helios serves as a hard counter against Yasmine. Whenever a critical hit happens, Yasmine will receive damage, effectively countering her.
This counter impresses me as it is another reason to show where there is light darkness can’t thrive, so also keep that in mind as you go through a dark path in life. “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Yep… just felt like quoting.
Celeste can also counter Yasmine by purifying her allies and removing Yasmine’s poison. This cleansing ability disrupts Yasmine’s impact on the battlefield.
Countering Ziri
Utilize heroes with magic or pure damage, preferably with high magic penetration, to attack Ziri effectively. Lars, Kai, and Peppy are examples of heroes who can be effective in countering Ziri.
Conclusion
These are just some observations I gathered as I played the game. Stay adaptable and consider the evolving meta and specific team compositions with time for optimal performance. Also, feel free to add your experiences and ideas in the comments. Happy Gaming.
